A modest social contract: officiis and their occupants
the annual election marks a brief formalization of what is otherwise an ongoing, comorbid process: the organization of thought into roles, and roles into action. each position represents a distinct mode of engagement, the organizational, financial, archival, and aesthetic converging toward the common aim to cultivate a space of circulated encountered & collective shape.
slate of candidate statements

Maikol Perez (any)
President
Ideas are the lifeblood of a club, club members are the heart of the club, and the officers are the support system that facilitate both. I am Maikol Perez and I want to be president of Phi Sigma Tau in order to help the club structure facilitate an environment of community, growth via ideas, and just fun times all around. Formality makes me feel stuffy so I’ll be personal instead. This is my third draft, the first was nice but boring. The second was solid but long, formal, and stuffy. I only now hope you all read the third draft and enjoy some of what I have to say. What I have to say is that I’ve been a member of this club since Spring 2025, I’ve seen many leaders come and go, but what’s stayed has been my dedication and interest in the club. In a war of attrition (against burnout, loss of interest, or what have you), I win because I have a goblin heart that never tires, I chug through with ecstatic and versatile dedication that adapts whenever opportunity meets preparation to form luck (shoutout Seneca). Therefore, my hope and my goal is to become president and put action behind my words by fulfilling the first line of this statement and thus fueling the heart of the club with joy, with satisfied wishes for the club, and also with my own ideas and the ideas of whatever E-Board I receive. That is my hope, that is my desire, and this is my candidate statement. Regardless of who you vote, thank you for your dedication.

Natanael "Nato" Echezabal (he/they)
President/Treasurer
Members of the FIU Philosophy Club and Phi-Sigma-Tau; with learned experience and humbled understanding from my tenure as President of the Philosophy Club, I seek to fill the roles of President or Treasurer of the Executive Board. As leadership of the club throughout 2025 and 2026, and through collaboration of an effective eboard team, the philosophy club saw our RSO club status reinstated, while also facilitating events such as Student Seminars and Philosophy DnD game night. I’m thrilled to see more involvement, and I seek to use my culminated knowledge and experience to further the club's development on all ends, while supporting new teams.
If elected to either role, my aim is to support in the bureaucratic logistics and offer insight into sustainable organization, which allows the flourishing of student-driven events and development. In all my involvements with Phi Sigma Tau and FIU Philosophy Club, I wish to see the club as a hub of student social engagement, professional philosophy-career development, and stimulating critical thought and dialogue. A club is only as effective as, not merely it's executive board, but it's enthused and engaged student-body. A coordinated club cabinet makes for a coordinated and integrated student club community. We've built momentum so far, and I seek to build our inertia further!

Kevin Garcia (he/him)
President
My name is Kevin Garcia. I am also a junior at FIU. I wanted to express my interest in running for a leadership role in the Philosophy Club, specifically President. I recently joined the club after finding out about it, and it made me want to get more involved right away. I’m still working on my philosophy journey, but I honestly think being in a leadership role would help me grow more and understand the field better. At the same time, I want to help the club grow too. If I had a leadership role, I would want to help put our name out there and get members of the club involved around the FIU community. I would also like to help organize events that introduce philosophy to students outside of a philosophical background, making it more accessible and engaging. I would also like to help create more volunteer opportunities for the club, whether that’s within FIU or in the broader community. I don’t just want the club to be a group of people who are thinkers but a club of do-ers. I also have leadership experience from the military, where I learned how to work with others and take responsibility. In addition, I’ve had leadership experience before, including serving as Vice President of the animation club in high school for 3 years.

Michael Andrillon (he/him)
Vice President
Hey everyone! Since joining the philosophy club I’ve appreciated how familiar everyone is with each other and the passion for the subject of philosophy overall. And in these unique times, it’s all the more important to keep that passion strong even in little ways, so I’d just love to help out and remain more involved. Keeping the spirit of philosophy going at FIU is important. Simple as that.
I’ve dabbled in film directing and handled positions collaborating with others for projects beyond my studies, along with political work with the Young Democratic Socialists of America. So expect me on set and to commit whenever we need something done. And with our subject being so broad and interesting, there is limitless potential for activities and discussions tapping into material related to literature, cinema, games, theatre, along with other important social issues I’d ensure everyone can tap into and feel heard on. What more can one ask for? Please consider me for vice president!

Alyssa Lobisi (she/her)
Vice President, Secretary, or RSO Representative
As Dr. Beer always said, we should not just learn philosophy, but do philosophy. To me, that means philosophy is not only something we read in a classroom or study on our own. It is something we build together through conversation, curiosity, and community. My name is Alyssa Lobisi, and I am running for Vice President of the Philosophy Club because I want to help make this club a place where that kind of thinking and community can flourish.
If elected, I want to help make our club a more welcoming and visible space on campus. I want the Philosophy Club to be a place where students don’t just attend meetings, but feel encouraged to participate, take initiative, and bring their own ideas to the table. One idea I would be especially excited to help develop is more student-led seminars, where members could share topics they are passionate about and gain experience speaking, teaching, and leading discussion. I think opportunities like that help students grow intellectually while also building confidence and experience that can support future academic and professional goals.
I also want to help the club become more present on campus, so that students who might never think to join can discover how relevant and exciting philosophy really is. I would love to help create more discussion-based events, because I think philosophy is most alive when people are able to think together in an open and engaging environment. More than anything, I want to help build a club that feels thoughtful, welcoming, and genuinely connected. Thank you :)

Emma N. Castillo-Melean (he/they)
Vice President
I enrolled at FIU as a Computer Science major, after two semesters here, I reconnected with an old friend from high school, he explained to me how he was also previously a Computer Science major, but switched to Philosophy after taking one course that changed his life. My grandmother would unfortunately pass that same semester, the last words she spoke to me were “Estudia mijo” or, “Study my child”. After telling this friend about the passing of my grandmother, he truly put her words into perspective. What would be the point of studying if I had no passion in what I was learning? He inspired me to chase what fulfilled me, not to waste my life unhappily in the hope of material success. This past year studying Philosophy and English has been the most incredible and fulfilling of my life. For the first time, I truly feel that I have found my purpose and a reason to strive toward something every day. I want to become the Vice-President for the FIU Chapter of Phi Sigma Tau because studying Philosophy has become, and will remain, my way of honoring my grandmother’s memory. I will use the skills I've learned as an event coordinator, graphic designer, and group writing coach to increase student engagement, create exciting student events, and help spread the love of Philosophy across FIU.

Juan "JP" Hernandez (he/him)
Treasurer
My name is JP Hernandez, and I’m running for Treasurer of the Philosophy Club! I manage event revenue, pricing strategy, and financial forecasting professionally as a Sales Manager for an event-technology company. What that truly means is that I find money where other people miss it. Recently, I audited a colleague’s event order and restructured it, and as a result, the venue earned a higher commission and the client ended up paying less. Same guidelines and procedures but more scrutiny with the numbers.
That’s what I want to bring to the club. Not just someone who tracks the budgets, but someone who will scrutinize every dollar so that we can do more with what we have! More events! More presenters! More community outreach and support! To expand where possible and to flourish as a club. My area of focus is the environment and my goal is to be an environmental lawyer. As an avid explorer, paddler and angler, my intimate connection with the environment encompasses me with a passion for its protection.
As a philosopher, I have learned that the more experiences we are exposed to, the larger our world becomes. As your Treasurer, I will ensure we are well funded to meet and expand our capacity for flourishing as a community. Please consider me for Treasurer!

Melini Gosine (she/they)
Secretary
Joining Phi Sigma Tau is a significant step for anyone dedicated to the pursuit of philosophical excellence, and I believe my unique combination of leadership experience and passion for the field makes me an ideal candidate for the role of Secretary. Having previously served as the President of the Caribbean Student Association, I have firsthand experience managing the complexities of a student organization. This role taught me how to coordinate between diverse groups of people, manage administrative timelines, and maintain clear, consistent communication. I understand that the backbone of a successful society is its organization, and I am eager to apply my skills in record keeping and logistical planning to ensure our chapter runs smoothly.
My commitment to Phi Sigma Tau is driven by a genuine love for philosophy. To me, philosophy is not just an academic discipline but a vital way of engaging with the world. I am deeply motivated to help promote our organization because I believe in the importance of creating a space where rigorous intellectual inquiry can flourish. As Secretary, I would not only focus on the meticulous documentation of our meetings and events but also work actively to increase our visibility on campus. I want to help foster an environment where students feel encouraged to explore complex ideas. My goal is to use my leadership background to support our executive board and ensure that every member feels informed and engaged, helping Phi Sigma Tau continue its legacy of academic and communal excellence.

Rye Thomas (they/them)
Secretary/Social Media Manager
Hi, I’m Rye Thomas and I'm interested in taking upon the role of Secretary and being on the E-Borad for Philosophy club here at FIU. Currently I'm a Psychology major here at FIU working on minors in Philosophy and Criminal Justice with my end goal to being a Forensic Psychologist.
First off, I believe that I would be a good fit for this club not only due to my passion in philosophy, but also because I possess leadership experience. I have been in club leadership roles since middle school, and previously in my high school years, I was the Historian/RSO REP for the Speech and Debate team and the President of the National Art Honor Society. This has made me extremely aware of how clubs' function and what it takes to make them successful and help them run smoothly. As stated by Aristotle “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit,” and this habit of excellence is something I believe I can bring to the club.
In the hypothetical of being given the choice to be a jack of all trades but a master in none, or to be a master in one area but below average in everything else I do, I would choose to be a master in one. When I find something I love, I dedicate myself completely to it and want to contribute to its success. Philosophy is one of those things so please consider me for the E-board so that I can aid in this club's success.

Dayana Pupo (name > pronoun)
Social Media Manager
my indictment to the philosophy department commenced when i vagrantly enrolled into an aesthetics course. the related phenomena of the curricula leaves me in a lovely simmelian bind with coterie & an overall nosiness of all that is version ineffable, propositional play. i’ve acclimatized myself into this backbone epoché & have emergent evidence bleached on copy paper, tables, & interface. i clumsily marry josef müller-brockmann & wolfgang weingart in design & prosody of flesh. as a member, it would be a pleasure to proceed inculcating this superfluous velvet to nameplate. to find instrumentalized opacity joy, to be in productive tensions without dislodging the other’s internal coherence, to be plural with internal grammar of sense- neither undoing myself or the proposed task’s immanent logic nor the generative structure of the collective. much of what i can do is in itself as painless as the recursive act of interpretation. like design, the words that you are reading will arise invariably through one’s attunement to its nascent form. participation is principle, this is to not vilify the operative ethos of décor & the extensions of render.

among the patches of purple, i bear the crop of certification in adobe programming, & can never quite dust off the apophatic data. the low-stakes metaphysics of the skinner box is ontotechnically snug, with feed as archival apparition, non-absolute; the grid remains my gospel & the negative space i labor in regardless.

my name is dayana pupo. i am an art history + philosophy major; minoring in spanish language & culture.

Alex Bello (he/him)
RSO Representative
Hi there! My name is Alex Bello, and I’m a junior majoring in Political Science and Philosophy here at FIU (yes… Philosophy is my favorite of the two majors).
I’ve been a member of the Philosophy Club at FIU since Spring ’26, and despite the brevity of my membership, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the space this club creates. There are, after all, only so many places where one can ramble on about metaphysics and not get weird looks.
This aforementioned appreciation is at the very root of why I’m running for the E-board as RSO Representative. As RSO Rep, my main goal is to ensure the club is adequately and consistently represented to the administration. I will assume the responsibility of ensuring mandatory RSO requirements are fulfilled so YOU, the members of the club, can keep focusing on cultivating a space for philosophical engagement.
As a Political Science major, I’m familiar with navigating the many perils of bureaucracy, and as a Philosophy major, I understand the value of spaces like this club. I believe this combination puts me in a great position to advocate for the club and its members.
All that said, I hope my (very wordy) personal statement earns your consideration for RSO Representative. Yes, I know Rousseau said, “the moment a people allows itself to be represented, it is no longer free”, but what does he know, right?!?! I promise, if you allow me to represent you, we’ll prove Jean-Jacques wrong.
